As special correspondent for Sacramento Union newspaper, Mark Twain had a go at surfing when he visited Hawaii in 1866. He paddled out on his wooden board, waited “for a particularly prodigious billow to come along,” then prodigiously wiped out, losing his board and gulping down “a couple of barrels of water”. I can sympathise.
